This 14-mile (23 km) stretch in far eastern NM was built along the Rock Island Railroad which came through just after 1900.
Wooden bridges and rusted steel guard cables are original 1930 construction. Abandoned adobe buildings make it look like a trip through the Dust Bowl...when your vehicle kicks up Rt 66 dust.
In 1952, Route 66 was moved to a newer alignment with concrete bridges some distance away. This section was left for local traffic.
Chewed-up original pavement was removed, leaving dirt and gravel, a sampler of what Rt 66 was like before it was fully paved in 1938.
