TRESTLE REMNANT (Rt 66 nr Glenrio NM)
The Rock Island Railroad thundered through here, paralleling an old alignment of Rt 66, for more than half a century. 66 was moved in the early 1950s. The roadbed, now dirt, is just past wooden posts on the right side.
The Rock Island was a financial disaster and eventually stopped operating in 1980. Salvagers got tracks and the like--but trestle supports like these were left as Stonehenge-type monuments to a way of travel, now vanished.
