WOODEN BRIDGE-NORTH (Rt 66 nr Endee NM)

WOODEN BRIDGE-NORTH (Rt 66 nr Endee NM)

This narrow wooden bridge carries Rt 66 over a "dry wash"--a streambed wet only after a rare thunderstorm. A lone steel cable threaded through wooden posts is visible at the top.

Several primitive 1930s bridges along this stretch forced a realignment of Rt 66 around 20 years later. Crumbling pavement on this original road was removed after 2000, although some asphalt is still present on the bridges.

The 14 mile (23 km) stretch from west of Glenrio to east of San Jon is now commonly called "Dirt 66." This is one of three images showing the same bridge.
