Building the Erie Canal today would be a significant achievement. A century ago it would have been a monumental achievement. But it was built two centuries ago, largely by hand and animal labor.

Adding to the accomplishment: it was done by the State of New York alone, without Federal assistance. And it was instantly profitable.

Today the Erie Canal sees long periods of calm. An artistic effect has been added.
