SPILLWAY, RIDER & FLAG (Erie Canal Lockport NY)

SPILLWAY, RIDER & FLAG (Erie Canal Lockport NY)

The upper three of five former locks are lit by directional sun in autumn. Lock gates were removed creating this spillway a century ago.

This is 30% of the original 1817-1825 infrastructure, five locks in each direction separated by the stone stairway at left.

The two upper arched walkways are of tapered stone blocks mounted to metal. At the upper right corner a bike rider waves after a steep climb on the towpath, originally for animals pulling boats.
