3-ARCH STONE BRIDGE (National Road Wheeling WV)

3-ARCH STONE BRIDGE (National Road Wheeling WV)

Construction of this bridge in 1817 allowed the National Road to reach downtown Wheeling and the Ohio River in 1818. Original limestone blocks are visible at the extreme left and center through failing 1950s gunite coating. The extended concrete deck and railings are retrofits.

US 40 still uses the bridge. The high arch is not a serious problem, traffic is slow (or backed-up) for a red-light and turn just beyond.
