WIDE CRACK DRIVE (Rt 66 nr Carlinville IL)
This play on words is courtesy of the late great Pontiac. During their heyday, Pontiacs had a wider stance than other cars, hence: Wide Track. The loop road around Pontiac MI was even named Wide Track Drive.
Here, Wide Cracks are the result of too many freeze/thaw cycles. And not enough road-building experience by the people who laid this down in one long slab, without now-familiar center or lateral expansion joints. Nature eventually provided her own.
The off-center yellow stripe is from a practice run, or maintenance on striping equipment.
