The Erie Canal was built through a wilderness from 1817-1825 using technology similar to Roman Empire days. It became America's first successful public works project.

This is part of the original set of 10 locks at Lockport NY. At the upper right corner a bike rider waves after a steep climb on the towpath, originally for animals pulling boats.
