The wagon and Scotts Bluff catch the final rays of a June day. Just ahead is Mitchell Pass, a trail blazed by the Army in 1850, shortening the pioneer trip by several miles.

The Pony Express shared this trail with covered wagons, riders leading pack animals, and stagecoaches.

The plant at far left is a yucca, a desert species with sharp points.
