This gallery samples the Pony Express route, riders and horses, historic sites, and related scenes east to west. The ROADS page has history.
The National Pony Express Association (I'm a member) stages annual Re-Rides. Images are combined from 2017 (westbound), 2018 and 2021 (eastbound), along a close approximation of the 1860-61 route.
Original riders were men and boys and there was no uniform. They rode a much longer distance from a Home Station and changed horses frequently at Relay Stations.
Some animals then were barely-broken mustangs, but many of today's horses are family pets.
The route, following the Platte River, went from NE into a corner of CO near Julesburg, then back into NE before entering WY. The Lincoln Highway and frontier trails also used some of this corridor and selected photos are included.
