Neon was a relative rarity on gas station signs. Back in the day, there was less visual clutter and traffic wasn't moving at 70 mph (110 km).
Ordinary stations had a porcelain steel sign with light bulbs shining on both sides. Internally-lit plastic signs with fluorescent tubes came later.
This classic sign would likely have been outside a major station in an urban environment. It now decorates Tulsa's Stokely Event Center, several miles from Rt 66.
