ROUTE 66, TEXACO MURAL (Rt 66 Tucumcari NM)
This ethereal effect is from streetlamps, neon and passing cars. Above this old Route 66 building, stars twinkle on the eastern horizon.
Many of Tucumcari's unneeded gas stations are being stabilized, restored and repainted by local artists Doug and Sharon Quarles.
This mural recalls the half-century when these two symbols were dominant and intertwined. Texaco had the largest service station presence on 66, and boasted it was "in all 48 states."
