S-BRIDGE (National Road nr Washington PA)

S-BRIDGE (National Road nr Washington PA)

This 1818 bridge actually has two stone arches. One has been partially hidden by the embankment for US 40 at the extreme left. The distance marker is a fiberglass replacement, merely stuck on a pole.

S-bridges crossed streams at right angles saving material and labor. The short approach curves were over land and not a problem until the automobile era.
