This downtown mansion was built at the peak: 1857. Sterling silver doorknobs from England were among the many imports. Plantation owner and cotton merchant Frederick Stanton had to charter an entire ship to bring everything over. He died just two years later but his family lived here until 1894. The property was later auctioned by a bank for less than the cost of the iron fence!
