Before the Civil War (1861-65) Natchez had a very high concentration of millionaires because of cotton and slavery.

Antebellum mansions that remain are monuments to unequal distribution of wealth. Many survive as Bed & Breakfasts or by giving tours.

Many town homes in this old city of 15,000 are more interesting. And hanging over everything is a lush canopy of southern foliage.

Natchez was the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace, and the modern Parkway has its own gallery.
