This was the northernmost point of the Confederacy. It was in Virginia until West Virginia was created from it in 1863. From here the country's northern border (on Lake Erie) is just 90 miles away. br/br/This was the northernmost point for slavery in the eastern US leading up to and during the Civil War. Segregation and extensive Jim Crow laws prevailed in WV for a century afterward.br/br/So the opposing flags are somehow appropriate, although they appear to be used as draperies. The Confederate side suffers the indignity of broken glass...and the Lincoln Highway.
