It looks like a cannon and it shot water at hillsides to flush out gold. It was called "hydraulic mining" and it started near Nevada City in 1853.

The practice did great damage, scarring and eroding hills, and putting so much dirt and rocks in rivers that flooding resulted.

In 1884, it was outlawed by the courts in what's seen as an early victory for environmental preservation.
