This gallery has images from towns and cities north to south along and near California State Route 49, the "Golden Chain Highway."
SR 49 began as a wagon road in the 1849 Gold Run. It twists and turns through foothills and becomes mountainous in the south. In many steep places there are no shoulders or guardrails.
Many of these photographs also appear in the "California Life and Style" gallery which samples the entire state.
