The red building is a former volunteer fire station erected in 1860. The yellow building is from 1861. According to a plaque they share a common wall and passageway.

Both were around when the Pony Express galloped down this street. In fact, for the last several months Placerville was the western terminus because a telegraph wire reached here from Sacramento.
