They inscribed it on granite--so it must be true! In fact, there were multiple beginning points and they changed with the years. But Independence has a solid claim, and many migrants did start here in some years--for Oregon, California and Santa Fe.

The three trails had a common general route into KS where the Santa Fe Trail branched off. The Oregon and California Trails used the same general corridor through NE and WY before they separated in ID.
