At this point the "easy" portion of the trip was over. Rock formations have started to appear, and soon they would not be curiosities but obstacles.

Emigrants had gone 30% of the way with only 10% of the difficulties. But trips to OR or CA were heavily back-end loaded. The last 10% would require 50% of the strength and endurance, just as people, animals and equipment were wearing out.
