1923 MARKER (nr Scottsbluff NE)
Scenes like this of plentiful grass on easy terrain would end very soon as emigrants completed the "easy" part of their trek to OR or CA.
Rock formations were coming into view now. Curiosities at first, they would soon become obstacles.
Emigrants had gone 30% of the way, but with only 10% of the effort and difficulties, except in years of high cholera. It would get much harder: the trips were heavily back-end loaded.
