ARMY WAGON (nr Kearney NE)
This was typical during the Oregon and California Trails period here at Fort Kearny. Note the seat has leaf springs. Emigrant wagons generally had neither--the able-bodied were expected to walk, easing the strain on animals.
Army and settler wagons used portions of the trails long after the emigrants (generally 1841-69). Many original sections are still used today by SUVs, pickup trucks and off-road vehicles.
