CALIFORNIA HILL #8 (nr Brule NE)
The top of California Hill at sunset. Pioneers and wagons took off the top 6 feet (2 m) or so, producing escarpments at both sides. The elements, plus cattle and perhaps ranch vehicles, contributed to irregular ruts in between.
Lens flare adds an artistic touch--but most emigrants were in camp well before sunset. Only stragglers saw a scene like this.
