CHOLERA VICTIM (nr Lewellen NE)

CHOLERA VICTIM (nr Lewellen NE)

An 1849 marker protected by glass in the Ash Hollow Cemetery. 18-year-old Rachel Pattison was a wife of two-months when she became ill one morning and died that night. Her 23-year-old husband, Nathan, made it to Washington state and lived into his late 60s, but never remarried. (Information is from an OCTA signboard at the site.)

The stone is interesting with a backward "4" at top but a conventional "4" at lower right...perhaps the work of different scribes using pocket knives.
