This 1948 granite marker installed by the county makes the overblown claim that "Here the Oregon Trail Began." In fact, Independence was one of several starting points. And the qualified claim is equally valid for the California Trail, which is strangely not mentioned. The Santa Fe Trail also began around here, in the early going.
