This is the path of pioneer wagons in the 1840-1869 period before the Transcontinental Railroad. This public art installation can be accessed from the Sutherland Rest Area of I-80 Eastbound.

Original wagon ruts have eroded into "swales" or shallow depressions that are perfect for native grasses and flowers--including these sunflowers. A watercolor effect has been added and the wheels have been colorized to an iron hue.
