HISTORICAL MARKER (Erie Canal Lockport NY)
"The Erie Canal was North America's most successful and influential public works project." -National Park Service.
It was built largely with hand and animal power by the State of New York after the Federal government dismissed the chances of success. Yet it was a practical and commercial triumph from the start, needed to be enlarged twice, and still provides enjoyment nearly 200 years later.
This marker notes completion of the original canal in 1825. An artistic effect has been added to enhance legibility.
