This excursion boat has just been lowered some 50 feet through a pair of locks. Now, as the lowest lock gates crack open, the boat begins to head east.

The dramatic elevation change is caused by the Niagara Escarpment, a rock formation that also created Niagara Falls 20 miles (32 km) to the west.
