ORIGINAL ROAD & WINDMILL (Rt 66, Santa Rosa NM)
This is the original alignment of Rt 66, now known as Blue Hole Road. It's hard to believe something so narrow and primitive once functioned as the Chicago-Los Angeles highway.
A scene from "The Grapes of Wrath" movie was shot near here, on the 1937 pavement that bypassed this section. It shows the Joads making their way along Rt 66 in their jalopy, while a train steams past them on a bridge high above the Pecos River.
