This was a "named" highway early in the 20th century before the numbered system began in 1926.

It runs between climatic extremes: from a city many Canadians call "WINTER-peg" to this hot, humid swampy place targeted by hurricanes.

The Highway is named after Thomas Jefferson, President when the Louisiana Purchase was made. The deal included New Orleans and much of the eventual route.
