This 1923 bridge predates Rt 66 by three years. It carried Chicago to Los Angeles traffic (plus locals of course) until the outbreak of World War II. Then, wartime demands forced a major excavation through this area, bypassing the narrow bridge with an early four-lane divided routing of 66.
