West Virginia became a state during the Civil War year of 1863, carved from Virginia which had joined the Confederacy. The decorative cast iron fronts reflect both eras in raised lettering (not just paint). There was also a change in the company name. In the background is a pedestal-mounted street clock reflecting off glass.
