The Comstock Lode created Virginia City. Some of the mining wealth was spent locally, a great deal was invested to build San Francisco.
After a disastrous 1875 fire, downtown was rebuilt largely with brick, stone and cast iron. Businesses now cater to tourists looking for a diversion from the casinos of Reno, 25 miles (40 km) away.
