White paint marks the pavement edge. This railroad spike appears to have rusted steel around it--and perhaps an aluminum disc. It's in a little depression with water from a thunderstorm minutes before.

BNSF's Southern Transcon is very close by, and the spike could have been mixed in with gravel then rolled flat without anybody ever noticing!
