DEAD MAN'S CORNER (Rt 66 nr Halltown MO)

DEAD MAN'S CORNER (Rt 66 nr Halltown MO)

There's the old casket factory on the corner. And there's old Route 66, still carrying local traffic at 55 mph.

The low sun got in your eyes as you glanced east. All you could really see was some doofus standing around with a camera. And now as you look west, that hill may hide a speeding truck.

The casket factory was lots of things in its day. It predates 66, and even the automobile, by many years. Building it here--where the shoulder ought to be--was not a problem back in the days of real horsepower, when the fastest sustained speed was a trot.

Although it's been stripped of windows and roof, and mature trees are growing inside, there's no visible evidence it has ever been struck by a vehicle.
