This was part of an early dual-lane section that bypassed the small downtown. It was abandoned to save on maintenance, likely when I-55 was opened nearby. Slabs of concrete that were once in the foreground have been removed.

The red vehicle at left is on two-lane Route 66. The pavement at the far right is a local street.
