This giant downtown mural is by artist Sam Welty and titled "Queen of the River Towns, King of the Trails." It stretches across the back of several buildings and rises to over 100 ft (30 m).

Pioneers bound for Oregon or California (many had not yet decided) are shown after crossing the Missouri River and entering KS. St. Joseph is at right...just above air conditioning units.

The mural inaccurately shows adults riding in wagons. Generally they walked to ease the burden on animals. The full trip was 4-5 million steps.
