This tableau shows two vintage "vehicles" on the 9-foot wide single lane of pavement that served as Route 66 until 1937. A typical sidewalk today is between 5-6 feet wide.

If there was oncoming traffic in those early days you simply eased to the side and kept one set of tires on the asphalt.

A lovely stone marker not far away tells the story of the Sidewalk Highway (or Ribbon Road). Left unexplained is why nearly all of this historic pavement was buried under crudely-applied dirt and rock. This is almost the only visible stretch--and it ends just ahead.
