The Santa Fe Trail started right about here in 1821. The log cabin town of Franklin (Old Franklin), built on low lands along the Missouri River, is long gone. Even today, with a levee, the asphalt road covering the trail can flood.

The historical site is also a hiking/biking trail, and markers abound.
