The story is convoluted, but trader William Bent relocated his fort and trading post here, on a hill above the Arkansas River. It later became a government military post.

Bent's OLD Fort was 40 miles (65 km) to the west. It has been restored by the National Park Service and appears later in this gallery.

Almost nothing remains at this New Fort site. Only some stones, foundation outlines, and this 1942 marker. An animal has burrowed under the foundation at left.
