William Becknell, a merchant, opened the Santa Fe Trail in 1821. He and four or five others left with pack horses loaded with trade goods for Santa Fe--then in Mexico.

New Franklin MO is on higher ground than the original flood-prone settlement of Franklin (Old Franklin), and has endured.
