This was America's first Department Store. In early Utah, some non-Mormon merchants would charge Mormons higher prices. So Mormon leader Brigham Young founded Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution exclusively for members. ZCMI is gone now, sold to what became Macy's, and the building is a mall.
