POPS AT NIGHT (Rt 66 Arcadia OK)
Pops is the newest Rt 66 icon. Just a few years ago this location in Arcadia OK, just northeast of Oklahoma City, was a farm field.
Pops is a unique combination of restaurant-soda fountain-gas station-tourist attraction and photo-op. A short distance away is one of the oldest icons on Rt 66, the Round Barn of Arcadia.
The 66-foot tall Pops bottle starts to glow and change colors at dusk, but doesn't really stand out until at least 90 minutes later. From this vantage point (in a ditch across Rt 66), the jutting edge of the brilliantly lit gas station canopy appears to almost touch the bottle. In reality, they're far apart.
This time-exposure, around 9:30PM in June, was several minutes long. Passing traffic shows up as red streaks near the bottom. There's also a boat on a trailer. Two people were talking, and motionless, long enough to become silhouettes.
