The restored Wagon Wheel Motel uses a highly-unusual freestanding see-through sign. Neon elements are encased in individual metal surrounds, then hung on poles.

A brightly painted metal backdrop would be more eye-catching in a crowded urban environment.

This sign was big and unusual enough to stand out during the Route 66 era. And it still does the job. You're not likely to miss it...in a city with only 3500 people.
