SUN #4 (Memphis TN)

SUN #4 (Memphis TN)

The control room that first recorded Elvis and many others. The studio is visible through glass. On the RCA control board (center), large black knobs adjusted the volume for each microphone. The output, monitored on the lighted meters, then went to the Ampex reel-tape machine (right front) which put it on a single track.

Owner Sam Phillips (shown on the digital screen) had been a Memphis radio station engineer. He bought the best equipment and had a great set-up for solo performers or small groups. Much of the equipment is original but modified and upgraded.

The Sun Records studio is open for tours (admission charged) and still does recording sessions. Info: http://www.sunstudio.com
