No photograph was ever taken of a Pony Express rider and horse in motion. Camera equipment of 1860-61 required very long exposures, measured in minutes.

This image is a pretty good substitute, however.

Background scenery hasn't changed in all that time, except for an added barbed-wire fence (a post is visible at extreme right). And this area along the Loneliest Road may actually have fewer residents than in 1860--now that the Pony Express relay stations are gone.
