AMES MONUMENT #4 (Lincoln Highway Sherman WY)
This shows one corner of the granite monument looking approximately north. Aligned with the mortar joint between two stones is a roughly horizontal dark strip--the original path of the railroad between east and west, constructed in the 1860s. A roundhouse was here along with other tracks, removed after this location was abandoned in 1901.
The Lincoln Highway originally went down the parallel dirt road you see in the distance before the house and rock pile. This monument was a landmark for both early railroad and automobile passengers--although in different eras.
