C. C. C. & St. L. (Lincoln Highway Galion OH)
Well before the Lincoln Highway came through, Galion was linked to the world through the C. C. C. & St. L. railroad--the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati & St. Louis. Everybody called in the "Big Four." Precious little remains, perhaps an old boxcar somewhere. But this carved stone over a depot window still looks as sharp as it did in 1900.
When the Lincoln Highway was established, trains were the dominant mode of travel--and Galion had 32 of them a day. FDR, Ike and Nixon gave whistlestop campaign speeches from the backs of trains in Galion.
The New York Central took over this line in 1929, and service dwindled to near-nothing by the 1960s. Later, the New York Central became a spectacular failure all by itself, and in the train-wreck known as Penn Central.
