SEEDLING MILE #1 (Lincoln Highway Grand Island NE)
Installed in 1915 with locally donated cement, this stretch was part of a "Seedling Mile" intended to inspire public support for improved roads--at a time when most were either mud or dust. It served until 1931 when a realignment put US 30 on a parallel stretch of new pavement.
This is the only remaining section of the original Lincoln Highway not covered with other pavement or widened. The vegetation is a problem, contributing to cracks in the century-old narrow concrete.
"Cement" and "concrete" are not the same. Cement (sometimes called Portland Cement) is one ingredient that makes the final product of concrete--in the same way that flour makes bread.
